In A Worn Path, Phoenix faces several obstacles as she makes her way toward her destination, but she continues because she has an important reason for completing her journey. Think about a time when you had to travel somewhere or work through obstacles to reach a destination or goal. What challenges did you face along the way? Was the journey worth it in the end? Explain why or why not.

One time where I had to travel through obstacles and events to reach my goal was sophomore year of high school. I had a goal of at least 5 A's in all of my classes at the end of the school year, and it was challenging. I had to balance school with work and sports trying to keep my grades up. In the end I succeeded in my goal and passed with 6 A's accomplishing my goal. In class today we finished the story "A Worn Path". We also started a new assignment on the story. I can reflect on this story by always challenging myself to accomplish my goals. No matter how hard it is to succeed and never give up.

In “A Worn Path,” Phoenix has a memorable encounter and conversation with the hunter during her journey. Think about a conversation you have had that had a lasting impact on you. What was the conversation about, and how did it change your thinking, perspective, or actions?

One conversation that I had that will affect me throughout my entire life is  when I had a talk about my financial profile. He taught me and still is how to build a portfolio that will be able to support me through my entire life and into retirement. This talk I had with him helps me see the value of money and what it can turn into with saving. This conversation I had with him was important to me and will effect me for the rest of my life. Today in class we started the story "A Worn Path". It is a very interesting story that takes place in olden times. I can reflect on this story by taking her will power and putting it into my life. She has a very strong will power to take the trip she did and I can apply this to my life.

Today, you continued working on your "The Life You Save May Be Your Own" PowerPoint project. Think about the creation process. Which part of creating your presentation has required the most thought or creativity? What choices have you made with your information, images, or slide design to help communicate your understanding of the story? Explain.

The part that has required the most thought and creativity is the writing upon each slide. The writing made me have to good and look up certain things about the story helping me learn more about it. Also I had to creatively think about ways to implement the subjects into my writing for each slide. Over all this creation of power point helped me under stand the story way better after the creation of it. Today in class we started working on our power points on the story The Life You Save May Be Your Own. We got to randomly choose a character and create a presentation on them.

Today, you worked on a PowerPoint presentation based on a character from "The Life You Save May Be Your Own." Do you think creating a presentation like this helps you understand a story and its characters better than a traditional worksheet? Why or why not? Explain your answer.

Yes I do think creating a PowerPoint like we did does help me understand the story better. Creating a power point gives me more creative freedom and makes me want to do the assignment more. Rather than doing a boring worksheet. Having to do the power point like we did also makes me research the character in depth like we did, this helps me understand the characters better helping me understand the story. Today in class we focused on creating out power point for our appointed characters. I had Mr. Shifflett, I learned a lot about him. I can reflect on this assignment we did in class by improving my time management skills. This will help me preform well on state test when they come up.

Have you ever had a first impression of someone that later turned out to be wrong? What made you form that first impression, and what eventually changed your mind? Based on what you have read so far, what first impression do you have of Mr. Shiflet? Explain what he has said or done that has shaped your opinion of him.

One time when I found a first impression of someone to be completely wrong was when I met my friend Ben. When I first met him I thought of him as quiet person who doesn't really express there emotions of talk much. But as I started hanging out with him more he opened up to me and started being more expressive. This is one time where my first impression on someone was wrong.  Today in class we read the text "The Life You Save May Be Your Own," and had a discussion on it. I can reflect on this by not letting my first impression on people let me decide how to judge them for the rest of my life. And to give everyone a second chance.

The title “The Life You Save May Be Your Own” suggests that helping or protecting another person may also benefit you. Describe a time when helping someone else taught you something, changed your perspective, or made a positive difference in your own life.

One time where helping another person made a difference in my life is when I met my friend Sahir. When I met Sahir he was struggling in my class so I helped him catch back up. Ever since then we have mutually helped each other in school when we are in classes together. This is one experience that benefited me by helping another person. Today In class we answered the questions to the text "The Life You Save May Be Your Own". I can reflect on the lesson taught by the story "The Life You Save May Be Your Own," and can input it into my life to help other people. Helping other people will always be something I will do.

Today, we learned about the two types of characterization: direct and indirect characterization. We then applied what we learned by analyzing characters from James Baldwin’s “The Rockpile” using the STEAL method: Speech, Thoughts, Effect on Others, Actions, and Looks. Now, apply characterization to yourself. If someone were using the STEAL method to characterize you, how would they describe you? Select all parts of STEAL and explain what they reveal about your personality. Use specific examples. For example, what do your actions reveal about you? What does the way you speak reveal? How do you affect others? What might your thoughts or appearance communicate about who you are?

If someone used the STEAL method to describe me, they would probably say I am funny, curious, and determined. My speech shows that I like to joke around and say what I am thinking. My thoughts show that I am curious because I think about a lot of things and sometimes wonder how stuff works. My effect on others shows that I try to make my friends laugh. My actions show that I do not give up easily when I really want something. My looks show that I am pretty relaxed and do not always try to stand out. Overall, STEAL would show that I am curious, funny, helpful, and determined. I was not present in class today due to being sick. I can reflect on this lesson to improve my writing skills. These writing skills can be put into my everyday writing to increase my knowledge.

In "The Rockpile", John and Roy do not always receive the same treatment from the adults in their family. Have you ever felt that you or someone else in your family was treated differently from everyone else? What caused the difference, and do you think it was fair? Explain.

In my family there is a three year gap between me and and both of my sisters. One is three years older than me and the other three years older than the her. I would say the older my parents children get in life the less support they give them. I think this is completely fair because as you get older you need to take responsibility. So when you detach from your parents and live alone you can be fully responsible. Today in class we answered questions on the book "The Rockpile." I can reflect on the questions by learning and using this information to get a high score on the SAT. I want to get a high score on the SAT to go to a good college.

In “The Rockpile,” the children know that the rockpile is dangerous and that they are supposed to stay away from it, but curiosity still draws them toward it. Think about a time when curiosity or temptation caused you to ignore a warning or rule. What happened, and what did you learn from the experience?

One time when curiosity got the best of me and caused me to ignore a warning was when I was in Colorado. There was a warning sign telling people not to go past a certain point, but I climbed over it because I wanted to see a view that I would not have been able to see otherwise. While I was there, I slipped and fell, hurting my ankle. When I got back, my parents reprimanded me for ignoring the warning. This experience taught me that sometimes curiosity can lead to bad decisions and that warnings are there for a reason. Today in class we read the short story "The Rockpile. I can reflect on this experience by listening to signs of warning. And not letting curiosity get the best of me.

Write about a meaningful object or place in your life that carries a story.

One meaningful object that carries a story in my life is my lacrosse stick. I have played through many games with it since i started the sport and it is very special to me. I have gone through tough times and good times with it. I will always cherish it in my heart and it holds very special memories in it to me. Today in class we took a test on the story "A Rose For Emily." I can reflect on this test by improving my testing comprehension. Taking tests like this will improve my skills and help me get into a good college.

In Part I of A Rose for Emily, Emily’s house stands out from the community and reflects both her past and the changes happening around her. Think about a house, building, or place that holds special memories for you. What does that place look like, what memories do you connect with it, and what does it represent to you?

One building that holds special memories for me is my house that I have grown up in most of my life. We moved into my house when I was very young and I instantly fell in love with it. I watched my sisters grow up in it and had some good and bad memories in the house. But this house will always have a special place in my heart. My loving parents raised me and my sisters in this house and I will never forget it. Today in class we started the story "A Rose For Emily," and answered questions about it. I can reflect on this story by staying sentimental about where I reside or places to me that are special. Like my grandmas houses and friends cherishing memories in them.

Emily struggles with letting go of people throughout her life, and the ending reveals the extreme length she went to in order to keep Homer with her. Why do you think some people have such a difficult time accepting loss or change? Connect Emily’s actions to your own observations or experiences with people struggling to let go.

I think people have hard times accepting losses and changes because they are so attached to the thing they have to change from or forget. For example if you were in a relationship for a very long and it ended it is very hard to change and forget about your partner. Another example is if you have siblings and one of them died in a freak accident unexpectedly it would be very hard to accept that loss for me and I think I can speak for other people saying it would be very hard to get over that memory. Today in class we went over the story " A Rose For Emily." I can reflect on the story "A Rose For Emily." I can use the information I learned from this story to help me get over struggles in my life.

In “Because I could not stop for Death,” Emily Dickinson presents life as a journey that eventually comes to an end. What experiences in your life have reminded you that time moves quickly? How have those experiences affected the way you value your time?

One experience in my life that made me come to realization how fast time really moves is when both of my sisters moved out of the house. They moved out of the house to get a greater education at college. After my older sister moved out time went by so fast and my other sister moved out as well. This experience made me realize how fast time really moves. I was from school today but I can’t reflect on this quote by living my life to the fullest and not letting time go to waste. I can reflect on this quote and include it in my life by living my life to the fullest. Time moves by very fast and in an instant I’ll be in college so I have to cherish the moments with my parents while I can.

In “Missing Your People,” Tracy Brower explains the importance of belonging. Describe a time when you felt like you truly belonged. What created that feeling?

One time when I felt like I really belonged in an environment, is when I hang out with my close friends. They have been my friends for a very long time and can be myself around them. We always do fun things like cooking challenges and it is very fun. This is a place where I feel like I belong every time. Today in class we did our common lit. I can reflect on the common lit we did today by learning from it. I can use their ways of scientific research and put it into my writings.

Write about a fear you have overcome.

There are many fears I have overcome but I would say the most recognizable is the fear of heights. I had this fear pretty much my entire life and slowly overcame it by doing activity like climbing mountains. I am now no longer scared of heights and want to go sky diving. I am proud of myself for getting over the fear of heights, I think it is just a step forward in me conquering all of my fears. Today in class we took photos for infinite campus and our school id's.  I can reflect on the activity we did today by conquering all of my other fears. Conquering the fear of height was just the first step for me.
